Kevin Johnson is Senor Field Advisor at the National Network for Safe Communities. Over the last twenty years of leadership and collaboration in mission-driven communities, Kevin’s work has focused on youth development & leadership, social justice, community development & empowerment, health & wellness, and partnership & network building. He brings his knowledge and experience to support and guild the Legitimacy & Reconciliation teams work and is responsible for advancing the NNSC programmatic goals by providing strategic advising to a portfolio of partner jurisdictions, guiding them in implementing core elements effectively and working with them to innovate in pursuit of effective, rapid violence reduction, and public safety outcomes.
Prior to joining NNSC Kevin was a National Organizer at the Black AIDS Institute, the nation’s only think and do tank focused on ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Black America. In this role he managed a national network of local chapters based in 26 cities across America. He provided support, guidance, and training to local chapters and chapter leaders. He was also responsible for developing and the implementation of the organizing strategy for the network.
Kevin has previously served in neighborhood-based, statewide, and national-focused nonprofits and as an organizer in and coordinator of several grassroots coalitions, steering committees, and advisory boards. His work has been recognized with distinctions such as the Rising Star from the MA Association of Community Development Corporations and the National Award for Excellence Community Building & Organizing from NeighborWorks®️ America. He is active in his local community and has been involved in initiatives such as, violence prevention & intervention, youth jobs, civic engagement & voter mobilization, and race dialogues.
Kevin holds a BS in Human Services from Springfield College (Boston campus) and certificate in Non-profit Management & Leadership from Boston University.
